On 28/12/2017 the Lazio Region admitted to grant the research project “Intelligent system for passenger profile and screening investigation” suitable for the issue of security in airport sites according to the Passenger Name Record (PNR) directive implemented by the LIBE Committee (civil liberties) of the European Parliament on 15 July 2016.
The project was granted a grant, non-repayable contribution, of € 252,831.77 from the resources of the Public Notice “AEROSPACE AND SAFETY” – POR FESR LAZIO 2014-2010 (www.europa.eu).
The aim of the project is to create an intelligent pre-screening system based on BIG DATA architectures for the control of air transport passengers with the aim of increasing anti-terrorism security levels.
The system is based on what is known as a Passenger Name Record, often abbreviated as PNR.
PNRs are compiled by travel agencies, air carriers and tour operators, contain information such as medical conditions and disabilities, meal preferences, means of payment, but also work address, email, IP address if you book online and personal information of emergency contacts.
This information is stored in a BIG DATA (Hadoop) architecture that is able to analyze it through Machine Learning algorithms using behavioral models, appropriately engineered, which analyze PNR with data stores, black-lists made available by government bodies and Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) available on the network (websites, blogs, social networks, media, search engines etc ..).
The benefits obtained derive from the results obtained with the Research and Development project that has allowed to:
– Define a prototype platform that is able to support the control staff of an airport site in the real time identification of people classified with a degree of risk based on the score calculated through Machine Learning algorithms.
– Reliable and efficient processing thanks to the distributed computing architecture characteristic of the Hadoop architecture.
– Real-time services, thanks to the distributed computing architecture, which allow you to assign a terrorism “risk score” to the person in real time.
